Quake New Player Orientation!

The Seattle Quake Rugby Club is pleased to announce their first New Player Orientation (NPO) of the year. This event is open to everyone regardless of rugby (or other team sport) experience.

The Quake is a club dedicated to bringing rugby to those who have been traditionally left out, with special interest to gay/bi men and men of color. Our club is a mix of straight and gay players who focus on the competitive sport of rugby while developing a sense of fraternity. All are welcome.

The practice will last for two hours with much of that consisting of a beginner’s introduction to the sport. There will be running, ball handling, and some basic skills instruction. After practice we will go to one of our team sponsors, R-Place, for some free beer and food. There, you will be able to socialize with the members of the Quake and learn more about this amazing sport.

Interested participants should bring: water, shorts, a dispensable t-shirt, and running shoes or cleats. Also, dry cloths to change into for the post practice social.

Due to some kind of server error we cannot log into and update our website. The news is handled remotely, so it can be updated, but our Newcomer's section is out of date.

We are currently not holding practices as we are in the off season.

NPO (New Player Orientation) will be held January 26th at Noon at the Montlake Playfield. More info to follow.

Despite morning temperatures in the 30's, the sun came out, the day warmed up, and the weather conditions for an afternoon of rugby were idyllic. The match between the Seattle Quake RFC and Kitsap RFC (a.k.a. OPSU) kicked off at 1pm (after a quick readjustment of an incorrectly drawn 50 meter line) to a crowd of approximately 50 spectators. The play hovered in the Quake end of the pitch for most of the first half, with Quake playing a respectable defensive game, capably defending the try line on several plays. Tackling was effective, with several guys delivering significant hits; Hooker John, Inside Center Brian Roth, and Fullback Wim Gates had strong tackling games. The opposition scored three times in the first half with no conversions. They had one sub (blood); Seattle had no subs in the first half.

The forwards were both our strong suit (winning our set scrums as well as many of Kitsap’s) as well as our weak suit (not winning possession at the rucks). The tight five consisted of Richard, John, Milly, Rich, and Matt, with Chris and Joseph flanking, and Conrad at the 8 man position. Jeremy played scrum half, Brodie played fly half. The backs played well, especially considering their inexperience as a unit. Paul and Jesson were at wing, with Brian and Kirk at inside and outside centers, and Wim at fullback. The half time score was 15 - 0 the Quake trailing.

The second half forced Quake to play the uphill slope of the uneven pitch, and Davo subbed for Richard at loose prop, and Travis subbed for Paul at wing. Kitsap tried twice with one conversion within the first 8 minutes of the half. Rich was injured 15 minutes into the half, and Etch subbed for him at lock. Other subs in the second half included Jeff W. for Brian, Doug for Conrad, and Brad for Matt. The opposition scored twice more with one conversion, and late in the half Davo went out with an ankle injury. With only one minute left in the half, Brodie tried and converted with the help of the forwards pushing the maul backwards over their try line (and down to a seven man scrum at that!), making the final score Kitsap 39 and Seattle Quake 7.

Kitsap hosted the third half at the Horse and Cow with beer and wings. Chris Peguero was named Man of the Match. We ended the last 45 minutes of drink up with rugby songs, and drink up ended around 6pm.

Unfortunately, Avalanche forfeited. It did give us a chance to rest and watch the Rugby World Cup Final match, though.

Match Report
A great day for Rugby ! 60 & sunny with a moist yet firm pitch. A very nice pitch at Agnes Stewart Middle School in Springfield.

This has been a well fought match over the years with varying scorelines. Today was no exception. Eugene clearly had faster backs. The Quake struggled during the 1st quarter and allowed Eugene to score 4 times with 3 conversions during the 1st 23 minutes. They managed to hold Eugene scoreless for the final 17 minutes. Halftime score 24-0.

The 2nd half started off tightly contested. Just at the end of the 3rd quarter of play, Eugene had scored 3 times with 2 conversions. Eugene was starting to click pretty well at this point. The Quake were visably tired & frustrated. Eugene began to break regularly & scored 5 more times in the last 21 minutes.
